A quick update

I thought I’d just post this to say that although I’ve been inactive recently, I am still planning on carrying on with this blog, but there are two short term barriers standing in my way:
1. Money
I’m a bit poor, but by tommorow I will be able to afford to buy an EVE subscription and carry on with my quest for Universal Domination.
2. Exams
I’m now in the last 2 weeks of Year 11, where there is an exam just about every day, so I really should start cramming a bit more.

Needless to say after these two problems are out of the way, I will continue blogging as normal.

I’m A Raving Lunatic

Well, all I can say really is that a long break from EVE really does make you stupider. And that’s not just a one off statement, it’s a fact. It’s happened to others (Exhibit A: EVE Forums) and now it’s happened to me.

“What’s happened?”, I hear you ask. Well I just got all the fitting skills I needed to fit a good Rifter and join BMC (if I wasn’t still on trial). While moving about, looking for things that I needed for my fit, I was basically doing things other than EVE. I bought most of my fittings from one station, but then I had to move to two others to buy the last things I needed. Since I was doing other stuff on the computer at the same time (watching Burning Eve 5, it’s good) I was auto piloting. I think the second system I went to was called “Amamake” which I believe is the 0.4 space I was killed in. Anyway, I didn’t realise it was 0.4, so I just turned on autopilot and tabbed the window to look at other things. When I came back in I had reached my destination and I thought nothing of it.

First mistake I made already is auto piloting. I should have really known never to auto pilot anywhere. I think it’s in some kind of hitch hikers guide to the galaxy rule book on the official EVE forums somewhere it says that it’s one of the worst things to do. Then the second mistake I made was not checking my funds before I even set off. When I got there I discovered I was about 1000 ISK short and couldn’t buy it. After being AFK for a little while longer, I decided I would go through the belts and look for some miners to try and can flip. I ended up ratting cruisers rats, which is (surprisingly) hard on a such a new character. Here comes the penultimate mistake. While I was killing a cruiser rat, a cruiser was barrelling towards me with a red pilot who had -9.9 security status. I didn’t even think why he wasn’t being chased. When he got to me he tackled me and started killing me. It was confusing for a while, I was thinking “Where is CONCORD?”. Then I looked at the security status of the system. D ‘OH! Now for the final mistake, when I was trying to warp out my pod I was using the right click menu. I screwed up and since it was lagging, I couldn’t warp before he got the lock on me. I’m now not a virgin to being podded anymore. :(

After a quick interface with my friend though, I learnt that there is a way to warp, even in extreme laggy conditions. I should’ve been using the “Currently Selected” box to spam warp.

Oh well, another day gone by, another Rifter blown up. At least I did actually learn something from it though. Usually when I die it’s due to circumstances that I couldn’t have controlled and could’ve never learnt something from. But not today. Today I learnt how to not get podded!

In other news, today I had to make the choice between buying:
A. Killing Floor (a 6 player cooperative survival horror zombie shooting FPS with an RPG element)
OR
B. A months subscription of EVE.

I’m sad (mainly because it’s downloading so slow!) to say I chose Killing Floor. But for good reason. I figure, if I buy a month of EVE Online, I’m still not going to be doing much because there isn’t all that much I can do with my skills. But if I buy Killing Floor, then it means I’ve got two games. And I can still train skills and go low sec roaming with my friend since I have quite a bit of trial left. And then 3 days after my trial ends, I can buy 1 month of EVE as well. So it all works out I think. Plus Killing Floor looks quite good.

Everyone has to start somewhere

And so begins my epic journey in the void of space, as a Minmatar character. My trusty Rifter is all I have right now, but with it I will be able to get so much more. Just one problem…

I’ve got to wait for around 6 days now to get all the basic learning skills to a respectable level. Which means putting the 4 basic attribute builders (Perception, Intelligence, Memory and Willpower, but not Charisma) to level IV and also putting Learning to V for future use. This is my biggest, but pretty much only problem with EVE Online,  is that if you really want to get anywhere fast, you have to do nothing for a week while skills train that just let you train other skills faster. Still though, I’ll be glad once I’ve got it out the way.

If there was another thing that I didn’t like about EVE though, I would have to say it’s the new character creation system. Before Apocrypha, you could start a character and be given an idea of what your career could be, aswell as getting some useful level V skills straight out of the box. But now, I can’t imagine any new player is going to know what the hell is going on. They choose their race first, which is simple enough and there’s nice descriptions of each of them, with a cool little video. Then the next step is sort of like picking the culture in side the race, with a good enough description. But the last step now just doesn’t mean anything. As a Minmatar Brutor, I had to choose between Slave Child, Worker and something else I forget. What the hell does that even mean? I think the only person that can see what your backstory is, is you and since it doesn’t affect your skills or which career path you take, it is now a completely unneccessary and confusing step. But back to the point of getting level Vs out of the box. That now doesn’t happen anymore. Instead you get a 100% skill boost (which I swear actually doesn’t work/do anything) until you have 1.6M Skillpoints. No matter what anyone says, skillpoints are a vital part of the game. And as it stands now, I think someone who created a character just before Apocrypha will have a giant advantage over someone who has started just after Apocrypha.

Anyway, that’s it for now. No action this week as I am training learning skills, but come back next week and read about me attempting to start my career… as a Pirate! Yarr!

Also please don’t let the negativety in this first blog post put you off reading the next installment.  Or if you did like it for some reason or another, please comment to say so!
