Well, all I can say really is that a long break from EVE really does make you stupider. And that’s not just a one off statement, it’s a fact. It’s happened to others (Exhibit A: EVE Forums) and now it’s happened to me.
“What’s happened?”, I hear you ask. Well I just got all the fitting skills I needed to fit a good Rifter and join BMC (if I wasn’t still on trial). While moving about, looking for things that I needed for my fit, I was basically doing things other than EVE. I bought most of my fittings from one station, but then I had to move to two others to buy the last things I needed. Since I was doing other stuff on the computer at the same time (watching Burning Eve 5, it’s good) I was auto piloting. I think the second system I went to was called “Amamake” which I believe is the 0.4 space I was killed in. Anyway, I didn’t realise it was 0.4, so I just turned on autopilot and tabbed the window to look at other things. When I came back in I had reached my destination and I thought nothing of it.
First mistake I made already is auto piloting. I should have really known never to auto pilot anywhere. I think it’s in some kind of hitch hikers guide to the galaxy rule book on the official EVE forums somewhere it says that it’s one of the worst things to do. Then the second mistake I made was not checking my funds before I even set off. When I got there I discovered I was about 1000 ISK short and couldn’t buy it. After being AFK for a little while longer, I decided I would go through the belts and look for some miners to try and can flip. I ended up ratting cruisers rats, which is (surprisingly) hard on a such a new character. Here comes the penultimate mistake. While I was killing a cruiser rat, a cruiser was barrelling towards me with a red pilot who had -9.9 security status. I didn’t even think why he wasn’t being chased. When he got to me he tackled me and started killing me. It was confusing for a while, I was thinking “Where is CONCORD?”. Then I looked at the security status of the system. D ‘OH! Now for the final mistake, when I was trying to warp out my pod I was using the right click menu. I screwed up and since it was lagging, I couldn’t warp before he got the lock on me. I’m now not a virgin to being podded anymore.
After a quick interface with my friend though, I learnt that there is a way to warp, even in extreme laggy conditions. I should’ve been using the “Currently Selected” box to spam warp.
Oh well, another day gone by, another Rifter blown up. At least I did actually learn something from it though. Usually when I die it’s due to circumstances that I couldn’t have controlled and could’ve never learnt something from. But not today. Today I learnt how to not get podded!
In other news, today I had to make the choice between buying:
A. Killing Floor (a 6 player cooperative survival horror zombie shooting FPS with an RPG element)
OR
B. A months subscription of EVE.
I’m sad (mainly because it’s downloading so slow!) to say I chose Killing Floor. But for good reason. I figure, if I buy a month of EVE Online, I’m still not going to be doing much because there isn’t all that much I can do with my skills. But if I buy Killing Floor, then it means I’ve got two games. And I can still train skills and go low sec roaming with my friend since I have quite a bit of trial left. And then 3 days after my trial ends, I can buy 1 month of EVE as well. So it all works out I think. Plus Killing Floor looks quite good.
