EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month’s banter comes to us from CrazyKinux himself, who asks the following: First there was the MMO on the PC, and now with the recent announcement of DUST 514, EVE will soon be moving onto consoles. But what about mobile? Allow your imagination to run wild for a second and describe how you would see EVE being ported to mobile devices, whether the iPhone/iPod touch, Blackberrys or Android-based devices. Dream the impossible for us!

Mike leaned back in the chair and pulled out his compad. “Lessee, market is doing its own thing, the frigates have another half day to cook . . . ” His pad beeped as a new message came in. “Ah, new addition to the corp . . .” He jotted off a quick welcome and continued his perusal of the technical reviews while his coffee was brought. Another beep. “Oh! So someone is taking the bait on that POS in wormspace?”

He quickly paid his bill and sprinted to get back to the ship in time to catch the action.

OOC commentary

I would like to see some things brought to Push rather than pull tech. Personally I use Capsuleer and love it (thanks Roc/Markus and Chris) But I keep imagining the next step. Alarm chimes as skill queue gets too short or a new skill completes. Mail, via Cosmos, straight to me. Warnings when special events are happening, preset for my needs, POS needs fuel or is under attack . . .that sort of thing. Or industrial and research jobs completed.

Do I dream really big and want to fly my ships on an iPhone? No
Do I already use my iPhone to follow blogroll, ccp dev chats, and Podcasts about eve? Yes. (Shoutout to Podded, Warchilde and Dillon Arclight)
Security concerns leave me to be slightly hesitant to be able to affect change form an iPhone on the game itself.

Lesson:

Anyone who thinks Eve stops when you get up from the computer, has not played it in depth, yet.
There is always something else to learn

Better them than me

Mike sat with the local “Scotty” and sipped a coffee as a group of groundlings, heavily armed, trooped by. “I brought them in from a convoy that was being hit.” He said to his companion.

“Saw the after action report. Glad to see that you finally figured out what the differences in ammo were. If you’d gone in with your usual antimatter the action wouloda been done before you got in range.”

Mike snorted. “Ya ya, the Snark now can hit at whatever range I need. And I do so love being able to let the folks know I am coming with a long distance tap on the shoulder.” He watched the group move off, heavy weapons group bringing up the rear. “Gods, never get me down there in the Dust. Poor saps got no shields, no armor, just standing out there waitin to be shot.”

“This from a guy who takes missions against groups of enemies thrice his mass loadout on a regular basis?”

“Yeah, well,” Mike reached back and scratched around one of the plugs on his skull. “I got the advantage of training and a good ship under me. I’ve looted mining turrets off of some active pirate ships. Who in Hels name mounts mining equipment going into battle?”

Scotty looked up in the air and whistled.

Mike grinned. “That was a special case . . . and I found some nice stuff out there in the wormhole. Place was lousy with rare roids.” He nodded back to the groundlings. “Ya know they all carry shovels? Maybe they are hoping to hit it rich on some dusty planet somewhere . . . ”

“Or it is to bury their friends.”

Mike sighed and whispered, more to himself than to the ‘Scotty’ “Better them than me.”

——-

The Lt was outa earshot so Chucky spoke loud enough for the others around to hear him. “Theres that poddy who got us out.” One finger flickered in scout sign identifying Mike on the side, sipping his coffee. “Freak.”

“Freak?” Wilkinson was the new guy, Everybody called him the ‘talkie toaster’.

“Depends on his hunk a metal to keep him alive, goes out where a single mistake means ‘pop’. Prolly doesn’t even know how ta shoot a pistol. Sits in ‘is little pod an pushes buttons. No real control o’ situations. Ya hear wha the Lt said? Guy came in solo to hit those pirates. He don’t travel wif no backup, don’t have nobody ta watch his back. Freak, pure an simple.”

“Not all poddies are freaks, some do help the war effort, don’t they Chucky? Don’t they?”

“For a while, but bein all out dere in space all alone do things ta their brains. Sooner or later they all snap. Read the interspace news. Top Minnie guy in their military . . . even got man-dolls made that look like him. ‘E just plead guilty ta dealin in slaves.”

“A Minnie slave dealer? Noooo.”

“Like I said, its bein out there that does stuff ta their brains. This poddy ‘ere. Ya he saved our bacon this time. But don’t color me surprised if he is the one hittin our transport 6 months from now.”

Wilkinson looked back at the man scratching some implant plug on the side of his head and shuddered. “Better him than me.”

Lessons

Make a small note for yourself as to the different hitting ranges of your ammo and carry an assortment. This is even more important when you are the slower ship and the other guys are dictating the range. Let them dictate, just be sure you can still hit them wherever they are.

I think that Dust 514 will be an interesting experiment, but the differences in platform, game style, and customer base is going to, for the most part, make us into two different entities tied together only in name. Far too hard to see any actual effects from one changing the other. Just imagine a group trying to take a system logging on to the Dust and playing for the wrong side . . .badly.

Wishlists T3

Welcome to the eleventh installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux.

This month’s banter comes to us from Joe Brusati a long time reader of CrazyKinux’s Musing, who asks the following: CCP states that T3 Strategic Cruisers are just the start for the T3 line-up. In future Eve expansions what would you like to see as the next T3 ship type. Please be specific on details about what role this ship would play, cost of manufacturing, and the different modules that would be available for it, and of course you must give your T3 ship a name!

Well, I definitely wanted to participate in this month’s Banter, but an unforeseen event last week prevented me from doing so, as well as preventing me from posting anything on this blog since last Tuesday. Indeed, though my wife and I were expecting our second child to come into this world sometime in early September, the little fellow had other plans and stepped into the spotlight on Thursday morning. Let me tell you that this surprise “happily” wrecked my well planned schedule for the next few days. I’ll have more on that story in another post. But for now, let’s get to the Banter articles!

Mike dropped down to the shop floor and went over to where “Scotty” and the rest of the workers were watching something on a bigscreen and laughing. Some were pointing to specific points on the screen and the laughter would double as the rest saw what he was pointing at. Mike swung about till he could see the screen . . . it was ship plans.

‘Scotty’ looked over and seperated from the group, still chuckling. “Need something?”

“Yeah, ‘nother wardec so gonna me doing some refit of a pair of ships, wanted your opinion . . . ” Mike drifted off as another wave of laughter rolled out from the group. “you guys laugh at my refit orders like that?”

“No, well, not always. This is pie in the sky designs the local pilots and corps are putting in for tender. Wish-lists. And oh boy are some doozies. One guys wants the firepower of a battleship but be able to be invisible and fast . . . . should name that ship Ninja and see how the pirates like it.”

Mike laughed.

“Another wants a miners dream of a ship that can change one ore into another . . . I’d call that one the Alchemist.”

“Good Lord the minerals market would plummet faster than an Amarr boat worked on by Minnie mechanics.” Mike replied.

“Yup, almost everyone of the designs is a dream of being the best and the brightest at what they do, with not regard for what can be or what is . . . gertanikpt.”

“Gertanikpt?”

“Oh what is the word . . . balanced. Karmic redress, to get something you need to give something. Most of these designs ‘give’ what they don’t want anyhow in exchange for more of what they do want. The balance goes out of alignment and they are not gertanikpt.”

“Got it. I think.”

“So, if you had your way, Mr Missioneer . . . do you think you could propose a ship that we didn’t laugh at?”

“No, my dream ship is as non-gertanikpt as it gets. I wish my Myrm could refit in space.”

“You dreaming me out of a job?”

“In a way, yes. I’d like to be able to coldswap modules in deep space . . . for when I am exploring. The ability to fit in the hacking or archeology stuff on the fly without having to haul my ass all the way back here. That is what I would want. Maybe it might take a bigger fitting, lot more mass, sig radius and all that sort of thing but I would like a dedicated bay that can swap out the scanners and tools of the exploring trade.” Mike shrugged. “Not that I object to coming down to chat with you guys . . . just sometimes it is a long haul from where I am back to here to switch a single module in and out. In deep space I don’t know what I am going to find and I would like to be ready to use what I d find out there . . . but like I said, dreaming, just dreaming.”

“Yes, well that is all most of this stuff is . . .come here we GOT to show you the guys design for a frigate that can out shield tank a Drake.”

“You’re kidding, THIS I have got to see . . .. ”

Lessons

1) Dreaming is fine, but balance of the game is better, in the long run.
2) Telling others your dreams is a very trusting thing to do. And will often get you laughed at.
3) If the dreams include a shipload of exotic dancers . . . DON’T share the dream, this ain’t that kind of forum
