The Good Fights~

September 1, 2010 in eve online by Elise Randolph

So, I had full intentions of flying around in a Worm and creating rage, but that didn’t quite work out as planned.  IT Alliance decided to “invade”, NC decided to try and invaded, I decided to move, and my video card decided that working was overrated.  So instead of flying around solo I’ve been scrubbing dudes en masse, some laggy some not so. I’ll spare the details, but I’ve written some very choice battle-reports over on SHC

But today my new video card came in.  Perhaps my video card wasn’t quite dead, but it was antiquated at best.  My new card, however: beastly by comparison.  So, of course, I put it to a stress test: 500 man fleet fight with all effects on high (though drone brackets off).  Flawless.  If I was in a slump before, consider it gone.  Eve looks like a whole new game now!  For anyone who is into Eve considering getting a better video card: do it and don’t look back.

I won’t lie, I did start blogging only for the prize – hey don’t judge I’m fairly poor and $50 is a big deal – but it is fairly enjoyable.  As far as what got me into this whole mess, the spy, I have been having a great time with it.  Today, for instance, I was able to hear both side of the fight.  Being in a logistics, I was able to anticipate when people were going to get shot and managed to put reps on him before it was too late.  It’s pretty much awesome.

Another perk about having a new video card: I can finally make an Eve video~  I tried to do this earlier and with two accounts running I’d get stuck in 4fps, it was p terrible.  But now I can truly break my way into Eves C-list~  So now I’m more serious about story-boarding a video, if you have suggests for fights and shiptypes you want to see: reply here or grab me ingame. Obviously I can’t fly pimp ships, but I can do lolfits 8)

Asymmetrical Warfare: Part One

September 1, 2010 in pvp by Prometheus09

The Captains Log 1/9

Solar System: Chaven

Station: Imperial Academy School

This part one of a two part series about asymmetrical warfare in Eve and how weaker attacking force have to employ guerrilla tactics to overcome the superior material resources enjoyed by defending forces.

On our recent contract in period Basis the local residents seemed to get a little annoyed with the fact that us Noir. pilots tend to cloak up and hide in the face of superior numbers, resulting in this hate site (http://www.noirarecloakyfaggots.com/) about us. Due to this I’m going to enlighten you all about asymmetrical warfare from the point of view of Noir. attacking a contracted target, in particular 0.0 alliances.

Why So Serious?

September 1, 2010 in Uncategorized by errantventure

Okay, so this one is going to be OOC and full of chatlogs.

Just because.

Basically, for the last week I’ve been with a corp called the War Party. It’s one of *those* Corporations. You know, inexperienced CEO wanting to do everything (before you go “how about you try to do things better???”, I have. Twice. And I’m still corp hopping. :D )…..

Basically, I was in the Recruitment Channel looking for something new (I got a Jump Freighter “we’ll haul all your stuff to 0.0 for you but contract it to me first with no ISK back to you and I’ll get it to the JF guy” scam from the Goons–Hi Ishii So!–) and I eventually decided to join The War Hut.

When I joined, there were like 4-6 members, and I had a Hulk, an Orca, and a bit of mining experience. The CEO, MrIngrish, asked me to be the Mining Director. I said sure, why not? I suppose that maybe I should have thought about it a little more when he still had his CSPA charge on.

my first sign of trouble?

When during a mining op a ninja came in and decided to have some fun. Newsy Lalonde, thanks for making the evening a bit more interesting (note: couldn’t find corp/fleet logs but there were more juicy tears in them. Sorry)!

More cov ops fail, militia beats gate camp and low sec.

September 1, 2010 in Learning the ropes by tgl3

I got a covert ops cloak fitted. I’m quite pleased. What I am not pleased about is a further guffaw in that I can’t also fit a probe launcher (this is on a Helios btw) until I further train covert ops. Move aside torpedo training, I want my probes.

A recent piece of EVE news is the banding of 2 opposing militia fleets to fight off a Wildly Inappropriate gate camp. Full story here.

It’s just the latest in a succession of amusing pieces of information, such as the epic suicide gank whose link is evading me, and the even more infamous loss of a crapload of PLEX by a Kestral pilot. Some of these stories just personify the open world feel of EVE. Anything can and likely will happen. That’s why I play this game.

Back to the original topic, I took my Helios out for a spin in low sec (despite the lack of probes). It is a hell of a lot of fun warping cloaked and sneaking past gate camps I must say. I evaded at least 3 and even followed round a group for a bit. Good fun.

I should have some actual combat news this time tomorrow, since we’re going for a frigate tournament in our corporation. Maybe it’ll be interesting, maybe not. Who knows?

Declarations of War Broadcast At PAX!

September 1, 2010 in General, Media by Jimer Lins

As many of you who read the Declarations of War blog know, I have a show (as “DJ Cyclometh”) on Split Infinity Radio- http://www.siradio.fm- on Saturday nights entitled the “Declarations of War Broadcast”. The name is an obvious riff on the DoW Podcast, and each episode has featured a lot of EVE content, such as panel discussions about how to fit and fly various ship classes, but I cover a lot more in each 2 hour set, from Guild Wars to TF2 to the next Dragon Age game. If you’re interested in checking it out, tune in on Saturday nights from 7-9 PM Pacific Time- that’s 0200-0400 Sundays EVE Time (GMT).

But wait, you said something about PAX?

That’s right, my friends. Yours truly is attending PAX as press this year, representing SI Radio. I’m taking along a bunch of gear and going to be doing interviews out the wazoo with everyone from NCSoft to CCP.  And we’re currently slated for a live broadcast from PAX at 7 PM Pacific Saturday, September 4. You’re definitely going to want to tune in.

Hence, the reason for this blog entry! I want to know what you want to know. I’m going to be all over the place (see below for my full and current interview schedule), including an interview with CCP on Saturday.

If you could ask CCP a question, what would it be?

Imagine you’re sitting down for an interview with a CCP game designer or producer. You’ve got a microphone and a set of questions- what would you ask? Let me know what you’d like to hear about and I’ll see if I can get the answer. Post a comment below or email me at cyclometh@siradio.fm with your questions!

Some Rules (They’re really more like “Guidelines”)

  • No stupid/troll questions. Don’t even bother. And yes, there are stupid questions, no matter what your 3rd grade teacher told you.
  • Keep questions fairly focused. If it would take ten minutes to ask the question or twenty minutes to answer it, no.
  • It must be civil. If you’ve got an ax to grind, go do it somewhere else. I don’t just want softballs but openly hostile or nakedly aggressive questions are not gonna fly.
  • Keep it short and focused (yes, I said it twice). I’m going to be VERY busy trying to keep things moving and I’m simply not going to be able to handle anything that rambles on.

This is done with a microphone and recording setup, so you’ll be able to hear the interviews on my show.

If you’re interested in hearing from some of the other folks on my interview list, let me know that too! I’m currently drafting all my interview questions so now’s your chance to get yours on the list.

The Schedule

My current interview schedule is below. This is subject to change and any of these could be cancelled without notice, but these are the appointments I have. As you can see, the schedule is quite full- and there’s not a lot of time for messing about between slots, but as I have time I’ll be roaming the convention hall and grilling people about their experience at PAX.

Friday:

  • 10 AM, TERA-Online- demo and interview.
  • 11 AM, Guild Wars 2, demo and interview.
  • 11:30 AM Aion (demo?) and interview.
  • 2PM, Vindictus F2P MMO, demo and interview.
  • 3 PM, Illfonic with Nexuiz
  • 4 PM, Turbine (DDO/LOTRO) demo and interview.

  • 10 AM Telltale Games- Back to the Future
  • 11 AM Portal 2/Valve

  • 5 PM Tron/Disney
  • 7-9 PM, Live Broadcast from PAX of the Declarations of War Broadcast!

  • 1 PM: Muzzy Lane

Angels and Sanshas and Ninjas, Oh My!

September 1, 2010 in Uncategorized by Mirei Nohoshi

I hit a very important milestone this weekend (well, important to me) – I finally got my standings high enough to embark on level 3 missions. It took longer than it perhaps ought have, partly because I’ve been working for Amarr Navy and the only level 3 agent (a) in high sec and (b) less than 20 jumps away from my current home was quality 17 and took something of a grind to get to, and partly because I find missioning so bloody dull.

But, I hear you wondering, if I find missioning dull, why am I happy to finally be on level 3’s? Two reasons: firstly, I have an expensive habit of getting my ships blown up when I embark on my more foolhardy endeavours and need a reliable source of ISK; secondly, I want to be able to use jump clones and for that I need to work on my standings.

So, there I was, having freshly handed in the storyline mission that got me to a smidge under 5.0 standings with Amarr Navy, feeling very chuffed with myself and raring to go. I was particularly pleased as I’d even managed to get the quality 19 level 3 agent in my home station talking to me – couldn’t get much better than that, could it?

Maybe it could. Turns out that my new agent is an absolute cock. The first mission he gave me was Angel Extravaganza, which I accepted despite being slightly wary of the high rewards on offer. Higher rewards generally means more difficult missions, right? Well, my Harby and I made it through alright, I took my time and was careful to kill the trigger ships last and came out with a boosted ego and several million ISK in salvage, bounties, and rewards.

What’s so bad about that? Being lulled into a false sense of security is what. The next mission I get is The Blockade, which doesn’t look so bad on the surface and has a similar reward to Angel Extravaganza. I fit the appropriate hardeners and warp off.

My ship slows down and I hit the damage control like I always do, start targetting the nearest ship and…SQUEAL. Shield’s almost gone – WTF?? By the time my drones are out and my lasers are firing, my armour’s taking some serious damage, beyond what my armour repper can handle. I hastily recall my drones, blow up the frig I was blasting and limp off to safety.

Right. Two armour reppers this time, and everything activated before I hit the pocket of hostiles.

Again, I limp back after only taking down a couple of ships. Level 3’s easily soloable in BCs, my arse! Maybe with some more training and better fittings, but unless I’m missing a trick that’s one bloody hard mission for a relatively new pilot like myself.

I’m not usually one to give up easily, but after the third warp-out I was texting my friend and pleading for backup. Unfortunately for me, he was out enjoying a Sunday roast somewhere and therefore couldn’t assist me in my time of need. I nearly told my agent where he could shove his mission, but I needed to patch up my bruised ego and wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.

It took a long time, but once that first wave had been reduced to dust the new ones spawned far away enough to offer me some respite and a chance to keep a slightly safer distance while I threw everything I had at them. Slowly, painfully, I finished the mission. Some missioners class warp-outs as failures, but I only tasted sweet success. I had taken the proverbial bull by the horns and come out on top.

My next mission from Agent Cockface was A Million Little Pieces. Well, those little pieces very nearly came from my Harbinger, which again took one hell of a thrashing. Only after a couple of warp-outs did I by a marvellous stroke of luck discover that I could keep the cruisers out of their optimal range with the help of my afterburner. After that, I made it through with relatively little trouble. Still, it absolutely astounded me that this hellish mission was worth practically the same rewards as Angel Extravaganza, which never got me down to below 50% armour with a single repper. What’s with that?

Anyway, I’d managed it and I was busy stripping the wrecks of dogtags and surviving fittings when I noticed a cheeky little Punisher flying up to me. No, not up to me, up to the nearest wreck. Seconds later, it was flashing red. Now, I’ve heard of ninja looters/salvagers, but this was the first time I’d actually come across one myself. I was at a loss what to do. I didn’t want to give him any pleasure by way of what I’ve seen referred to as “carebear tears,” but I didn’t want to let him just get away with it, either.

After a couple of minutes of me trying to get to my loot first, I decided to target him. As he came within optimal range of my lasers, I opened fire. He warped off just as I got most of his armour down, but my relief was shortlived. There, in the corner of my display, was the dreaded aggression countdown.

Bollocks. He knew where I was, what I was flying, and he could now come and blow me to pieces in a bigger ship without fear of reprisal from CONCORD. Needless to say, I docked up in a jiffy.

When I emerged from hiding 15 minutes later and headed back to the mission site, I fully expected there to be nothing left for me to loot. To my great surprise, most of the remaining wrecks still contained dog tags and miscellaneous goodies for me to cash in on. I guess that guy wasn’t hugely fussed about the loot and was after an easy kill (or just a bit of tomfoolery, you never know), but in any case it spiced up my evening a bit and gave me a little anecdote to write about.

So, all in all it was quite an eventful weekend and a baptism by fire to the world of level 3 missions. It’ll be interesting to see what Agent Cockface throws at me tonight.

Over and out.

Getting back in the game

September 1, 2010 in Uncategorized by Kennesaw Breach

Getting a few moments here and there to play. Noob lesson of the week: it actually matters what sort of weapons you fit on your boat, and what ammo you load into it. Example: don’t put antimatter hybrid charges into a railgun, they’re intended for blasters. And if your ship has bonuses for hybrid turret damage and falloff range, it’s intended for blasters. If your ship has bonuses for hybrid turret damage and maximum targeting or optimal range, its more intended for railguns. If you fit lasers on either of these, you’re running a strong risk of fail-fitting your ship.

That is all for now. Hopefully I’ll be able to play more and update more soon. At least starcraft 2, and not fire or other real-life issue, is the culprit this time ;)
