Know your ships! I cannot stress this enough, know your ships. If you do not know what you’re up against, you will lose gear. You’ll lose it either way, but if you jump into a fight and have mistaken your target for something else, you’re fighting a lost cause. I only bring this up because I lost a Harpy the other morning to a Scythe, which I thought was a frigate and not a cruiser. Yes, a Harpy should be able to take a Scythe down with little to no trouble, but I jumped in and was less than 3k away and still thinking it was a Frigate, so I never tried to get to my optimal. Put a hell of a dent in the Scythe’s armor, but I went down in flames. So again, KNOW YOUR SHIPS!
I started with the bad news, so here’s the good news. Two hours prior to losing that Harpy, I got on to three kill mails and it was great. I had logged in Auner earlier in the day, after not finding anything to kill and when I logged back in, found that TGA was active in the system. Slipped into the fleet and logged into comms and about ten minutes, maybe twenty minutes later we were out for a roam. Our target was Evati and we had a small group of ships, perfect set up for terror and destruction.
After a few jumps with some probables, but nothing pinned down yet, we jumped into Todifrauan. I had some static on the comms and didn’t hear our next jump location when a Thrasher jumped through the gate and decloaked and started to lock me, I laughed. This is low sec and engaging on the gate wasn’t a bright move. One of our fleet members had also decloaked and was being targeted and then fired on. You’re on a gate, you have a Harpy and a Jaguar sitting there and you engage the Jaguar in a Thrasher… what are you thinking? I go into orbit, point (just in case) and begin to fire. Other fleet members warp back and this guy lights up like a Christmas tree, it was gorgeous.
Thrasher’s friends start to appear in system and we scatter and eventually left the system. A jump or two later we get a few hits on the scanner and a confirm location on some fresh targets. To be fair, I don’t remember what was in the belt to begin with, this was days ago now it seems and I was tired, but it ended up being a Drake, Harbinger, Vexor and a Jaguar. Our group had grown at this point to nine members in fleet, so numbers were in our favor. Jumped in, Jaguar was called primary and popped in seconds, fast enough that I didn’t even get on that kill. The Drake and Vexor had vanished, so we moved to the Harbinger and it’s drones and he was going down quick. The call came to snag the pod when the ship exploded, but that was going to be an option.
Just as the Harb was about to go down, the Vexor came back and the Harbinger’s pod was no longer our concern. Vexor was called secondary target after the Harbinger and we changed to that and it’s drones as soon as the Harbinger popped. While burning through the Vexor, the Drake came back and then warped off again. Warping off was his best bet honestly. As soon as the Vexor went down, we had the pod locked up and our FC had opened a chat with them to ransom the pod. The pilot accepted the terms, wired the isk and the order came to let the pod go. Locks and points were dropped and the pod warped off. Loot was collected and we scattered to wait out the timers.
When the timers had all ended, we started making our way back to Auner. We had a few more probables, but nothing that was going to be easily found and nothing worth wasting time on. We returned to Auner without incident and most of us docked up and logged for the night. I stuck around for a while and then opted to hunt solo, which leads us back to the start of the post. At the moment, I’m enjoying the three kills to one loss ratio, but I’m hoping to up that. More kills (and losses) to come.
